2 Timothy 1:7
"For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind."
-
“God has not given us a spirit of fear”
-
The Greek word for fear here can also mean timidity or cowardice.
-
Paul is reminding Timothy (a young pastor who may have been facing discouragement or opposition) that fear is not from God.
-
Fear often paralyzes faith, but it doesn’t come from the Holy Spirit.
-
-
“But of power”
-
Through the Holy Spirit, believers are given spiritual strength—courage to face trials, boldness to share the gospel, and endurance to keep going.
-
-
“And of love”
-
Love is central to the Christian life (John 13:34–35, 1 Corinthians 13).
-
God gives us the ability to love Him, love others, and even love enemies.
-
Love pushes out fear (1 John 4:18).
-
-
“And of a sound mind”
-
Also translated as self-control, discipline, or sound judgment.
-
It means God gives us the ability to think clearly, stay balanced, and live wisely—not ruled by emotions or fear.
-
-
When fear rises, remember it isn’t from God.
-
When you feel weak, lean on the Spirit’s power.
-
When hatred or division shows up, respond with love.
-
When confusion comes, rely on the sound mind God has given you through His Word and Spirit.
2 Timothy 1:7 is a reminder that Christians are not meant to live timid, fearful lives. Instead, God equips us with boldness, love, and wisdom to face anything.
