When a Man Refuses Leadership, Confusion Enters the Relationship
Understanding Emotional Control, Boundaries, and the Spirit of Jezebel
One of the most misunderstood subjects in relationships is emotional control and the absence of healthy leadership.
Many people only discuss the spirit of Jezebel from the perspective of manipulation, intimidation, seduction, rebellion, and control. And while those characteristics clearly existed in Scripture, there is another side of the conversation many people ignore.
The deeper issue is often connected to:
• emotional instability,
• lack of boundaries,
• absence of healthy leadership,
• fear,
• insecurity,
• wounded identity,
• and relationships without structure.
A controlling spirit only continues where leadership, emotional discipline, and boundaries are weak.
Jezebel and Ahab
The Bible paints a powerful picture through the relationship between Jezebel and Ahab.
Scripture says concerning Ahab:
“But there was none like unto Ahab, which did sell himself to work wickedness in the sight of the Lord, whom Jezebel his wife stirred up.” The First Book of the Kings
Notice the wording:
“whom Jezebel stirred up.”
Ahab was king, but he lacked strength, restraint, clarity, and spiritual leadership.
When leadership becomes passive, confusion enters the environment.
Jezebel did not become influential in a vacuum.
Her influence increased because weakness and passivity already existed.
A Man That Avoids Leadership Creates Imbalance
Many men avoid leadership because they:
• fear conflict,
• fear emotional reactions,
• fear tension,
• fear rejection,
• or simply want temporary peace.
But temporary peace without boundaries eventually creates long term disorder.
When a man constantly:
• avoids hard conversations,
• refuses to set boundaries,
• surrenders convictions,
• or allows emotional pressure to make decisions for him,
he unintentionally trains people around him that emotions can control him.
This creates imbalance inside the relationship.
“He that hath no rule over his own spirit is like a city that is broken down, and without walls.” — The Book of Proverbs
The first person a man must learn to lead is himself.
Leadership Is Not Control
Many people confuse leadership with domination.
Healthy leadership is not:
• intimidation,
• yelling,
• manipulation,
• aggression,
• pride,
• emotional shutdown,
• or control.
Healthy leadership is:
• consistency,
• emotional discipline,
• wisdom,
• accountability,
• peace,
• clarity,
• and steadiness.
A mature man learns:
• how to remain calm under pressure,
• how to say no without guilt,
• how to establish boundaries without anger,
• and how to communicate clearly without emotional reactions controlling the atmosphere.
“Be angry, and sin not.” The Epistle to the Ephesians
Emotions are real.
But maturity teaches us not to become servants to them.
Emotional Manipulation Only Works When It Is Rewarded
Many unhealthy cycles continue because emotional instability keeps producing results.
If someone learns they can use:
• anger,
• silence,
• guilt,
• emotional pressure,
• fear,
• emotional outbursts,
• or instability
to control situations, they will often continue repeating those behaviors.
This applies to both men and women.
That is why boundaries matter.
A mature man learns:
• how to remain compassionate without becoming passive,
• how to love without surrendering wisdom,
• and how to maintain peace without losing leadership.
“Speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things.” The Epistle to the Ephesians
Truth without love becomes harsh.
Love without truth becomes unhealthy.
Maturity requires both.
Women Are Precious, But Men and Women Are Wired Differently
Women are precious, valuable, nurturing, emotionally intelligent, and deeply influential.
But men and women are wired differently.
A man is naturally designed for leadership, structure, protection, responsibility, and direction.
When a man refuses leadership, avoids boundaries, or becomes emotionally passive, it often forces a woman into emotional positions she was never designed to carry alone.
Then frustration, instability, emotional pressure, and imbalance begin increasing inside the relationship.
Many men think avoiding conflict is love.
But avoiding leadership can create greater confusion later.
A mature man leads through:
• steadiness,
• sacrifice,
• wisdom,
• communication,
• emotional regulation,
• and consistency.
“For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.” The Second Epistle to Timothy
A sound mind is part of spiritual maturity.
Another Perspective People Ignore About Jezebel
Most teachings only focus on Jezebel being:
• evil,
• manipulative,
• controlling,
• rebellious,
• or seductive.
And while those things were clearly present, another perspective is often ignored.
What if part of the dysfunction also grew because healthy leadership was absent?
What if emotional instability expanded because there was no strong, grounded, emotionally disciplined leadership helping create order?
This does not excuse manipulation or toxic behavior.
But it helps explain how unhealthy patterns grow and spread within relationships.
Sometimes people become emotionally controlling because internally they are:
• wounded,
• fearful,
• unstable,
• insecure,
• emotionally unregulated,
• or trying to survive emotionally.
Without wisdom, boundaries, accountability, and leadership, dysfunction grows stronger.
Your energy is a seed.
If many men could revisit earlier seasons of life, they would probably be shocked at how many:
• promotions,
• opportunities,
• relationships,
• friendships,
• business connections,
• and open doors
they lost simply because their emotions, words, reactions, and internal energy were not under control.
Sometimes it was not lack of talent.
Sometimes it was not lack of intelligence.
Sometimes it was not even lack of opportunity.
Sometimes it was:
• emotional instability,
• pride,
• anger,
• insecurity,
• wounded communication,
• or lack of self control.
“Death and life are in the power of the tongue.” The Book of Proverbs
Words create environments.
Energy affects atmospheres.
Communication shapes outcomes.
Internal Growth Produces External Growth
When a man learns to conquer old patterns and allow healthier patterns to emerge, internal growth eventually produces external growth.
The external world rarely changes permanently until the internal world genuinely changes first.
Many people want:
• healthy relationships,
• favor,
• opportunities,
• success,
• financial growth,
• and peace,
while still operating from:
• emotional instability,
• reactive communication,
• wounded thinking,
• pride,
• and lack of self control.
Real transformation begins within.
A mature man eventually realizes:
• leadership starts internally,
• emotional regulation is strength,
• boundaries are healthy,
• peace requires wisdom,
• and self control is power.
“All things are possible to him that believeth.” The Gospel According to Mark
True belief eventually transforms:
• your thinking,
• your communication,
• your reactions,
• your habits,
• your energy,
• and your entire way of living.
When the internal changes, the external eventually follows.
