The Battle of Voices

The Battle of Voices

One of the greatest battles we face is not the battle around us it is the battle over which voice we choose to believe.

Every decision we make begins with a voice.

Every belief we hold was influenced by a voice.

Every direction we take is shaped by the voices we consistently allow into our lives.

The very first temptation recorded in Scripture was not about fruit. It was about trusting one voice over another.

God had already spoken.

Genesis 2:16–17 (NKJV)

“And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, ‘Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat; but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat…’”

Then another voice entered the Garden.

Genesis 3:1 (NKJV)

“Now the serpent was more cunning than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made…”

The serpent’s first attack was not against Adam or Eve. It was against God’s Word.

Genesis 3:4–5 (NKJV)

“Then the serpent said to the woman, ‘You will not surely die.’”

Satan’s strategy has never changed. If he can change the voice you trust, he can change the direction of your life.

Adam listened to Eve.

Eve listened to the serpent.

The serpent listened to Satan.

Humanity fell because God’s voice was exchanged for another voice.

That battle still exists today.

“You need to get a new job.”

“You need to retire.”

“You need to get a new car.”

“You need to major in engineering.”

“You need to move to another country.”

“You need to do whatever the doctor tells you.”

Our parents have a voice.

Our spouse has a voice.

Our children have a voice.

Friends have a voice.

Social media has a voice.

The news has a voice.

Culture has a voice.

Fear has a voice.

Success has a voice.

Even our own emotions have a voice.

Many of these voices are sincere. Some are wise. Some are completely wrong. The issue is not whether people have a voice. The issue is which voice has authority.

Jesus said,

John 10:27 (NKJV)

“My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.”

Notice that Jesus never promised His sheep would never hear other voices.

He promised they would recognize His voice.

Isaiah gives us this promise.

Isaiah 30:21 (NKJV)

“Your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, ‘This is the way, walk in it,’ whenever you turn to the right hand or whenever you turn to the left.”

The voice of God brings direction.

Solomon reminds us:

Proverbs 3:5–6 (NKJV)

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.”

Paul writes,

Romans 12:2 (NKJV)

“And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind…”

A renewed mind learns to reject the world’s thinking and embrace God’s truth.

James adds,

James 1:5 (NKJV)

“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God…”

Before asking everyone else, ask God.

The psalmist understood where true stability comes from.

Psalm 1:1–2 (NKJV)

“Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly… But his delight is in the law of the Lord, And in His law he meditates day and night.”

Notice that the first blessing in Psalms begins with learning whose counsel not to follow.

Paul also says,

Colossians 3:15 (NKJV)

“And let the peace of God rule in your hearts…”

Peace is often one of God’s greatest confirmations.

Finally, John gives this warning.

1 John 4:1 (NKJV)

“Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God…”

Not every voice deserves your trust.

Not every opportunity is God’s opportunity.

Not every delay is a denial.

Not every open door is God’s door.

Spiritual maturity is learning to filter every voice through the Word of God and the leading of the Holy Spirit.

At this stage of my life, looking back, I am amazed at how many of my beliefs were shaped by voices.

Teachers.

Parents.

Friends.

Preachers.

Television.

The internet.

Experts.

Books.

Some voices strengthened my faith.

Some challenged me to grow.

Others quietly planted fear, anxiety, doubt, or limitation.

Looking back, I realize that voices don’t just influence our decisions—they influence what we believe to be true. What we repeatedly hear eventually becomes the lens through which we see life.

That realization has been one of the greatest lessons of my spiritual journey.

The older I become, the more I understand that wisdom is not hearing more voices. Wisdom is becoming more sensitive to the voice of God.

When His voice becomes your foundation, every other voice is put into its proper place.

It is truly amazing to wake up one day and realize how much the voices around you have shaped your thinking.

But it is even more amazing to discover the freedom that comes when God’s voice becomes the loudest voice in your life.

The voices you consistently listen to will shape your beliefs.

Your beliefs will shape your decisions.

Your decisions will determine the direction of your life.

May we all become people who hear many voices but faithfully follow only One.
