Many People Misunderstand John 1:1–18

The Logos Is More Than Speech, Thoughts, or Ideas - Jesus Christ Was Not Merely an Idea in Eternity

John 1:1–18 is one of the most profound passages in all of Scripture. It opens the Gospel of John by taking us beyond Bethlehem, beyond creation, and beyond time itself. John begins in eternity.

Yet many people reduce the word Logos to mean only speech, language, mental concepts, or thoughts. They speak as if Jesus Christ was only an idea in eternity who later became a person. But the passage reveals something far greater than that.

The Logos is not lifeless information. The Logos is God’s living self-expression, divine wisdom, eternal purpose, and perfect revelation manifested in Jesus Christ.

Thoughts and Words Come From a Person

A thought does not exist independently.
Words do not create themselves.
Speech points to a speaker.
Thoughts point to a thinker.
Ideas come from a living source with consciousness, will, identity, and presence.

This is true in everyday life, and it is true when speaking about divine reality.

If there are divine thoughts, they belong to God.
If there is divine wisdom, it belongs to God.
If there is divine expression, it comes from the living God.

Thoughts are not persons by themselves. They reveal the person behind them.

Understanding Ruach and Pneumatology

In Scripture, God is not presented as an impersonal force. God is living Spirit.

The Hebrew word ruach can mean spirit, breath, wind, life-force, invisible movement, or living presence. It carries the idea of life and active reality.

Pneumatology is a Greek theological term. It comes from:
    •    Pneuma = spirit, breath, wind
    •    Logos = word, discourse, study, expression

Pneumatology is the study of spirit and spiritual reality.

Why does this matter?

Because spirit in Scripture is not dead energy or floating concepts. Spirit points to living presence, consciousness, movement, inward reality, and active life.

The Spirit Reveals What Is Within a Person

I Corinthians 2:11

“For what man knows the things of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God.”

This verse shows that spirit is connected to inward knowledge and personal awareness. The spirit of a man knows the things of a man. The Spirit of God knows the things of God.

Truth is tied to personhood, not detached ideas.

I Corinthians 2:14

“But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him…”

Divine truth cannot be fully grasped by natural categories alone. Spiritual things are spiritually discerned.

John Begins With Living Divine Reality

John does not say:

“In the beginning was an idea.”

He says:

John 1:1

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”

This is eternal divine self-expression. The Logos is inseparable from God and fully reveals God.

John 1:2

“He was in the beginning with God.”

John 1:3

“All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made.”

Creation itself is connected to the Logos.

The Word Became Flesh

John 1:14

“And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us…”

This does not mean abstract language turned into skin.

It means God’s eternal self-revelation entered human history in the person of Jesus Christ.

The invisible became visible.
The eternal entered time.
The unseen was manifested.
The divine drew near.

Jesus Reveals the Invisible God

John 1:18

“No one has seen God at any time. The only begotten Son… He has declared Him.”

Jesus does not merely talk about God. He reveals God.

Colossians 1:15

“He is the image of the invisible God…”

Hebrews 1:3

“The brightness of His glory and the express image of His person…”

John 14:9

“He who has seen Me has seen the Father.”

To see Christ is to behold the clearest revelation of God given to humanity.

Even Lucifer’s Words Came From a Person

When rebellion appeared, it did not come from random ideas floating in space. It came from a personal being exercising will against God.

Isaiah 14:13

“For you have said in your heart: ‘I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne…’”

Those words came from a conscious being.

Ezekiel 28:15

“You were perfect in your ways from the day you were created, till iniquity was found in you.”

Even fallen thoughts came from a person. How much more does divine truth come from the living God.

Jesus Said He Saw Satan Fall

Luke 10:18

“I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven.”

This reveals Christ’s authority, heavenly knowledge, and supremacy over all spiritual powers.

It also shows that Christ’s identity cannot be reduced to a mere earthly beginning.

More Witnesses to Christ’s Eternal Glory

John 17:5

“Glorify Me together with Yourself, with the glory which I had with You before the world was.”

Micah 5:2

“Whose goings forth are from of old, from everlasting.”

Revelation 13:8

“The Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.”

Ephesians 1:4

“He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world.”

Scripture consistently points beyond time to the eternal significance of Christ.

Why This Matters

If Jesus were only an idea, He could not love.
If He were only speech, He could not save.
If He were only a concept, He could not heal.
If He were only language, He could not reign.

But because the Logos is the living revelation of God manifested in Christ, He can bring:
    •    Light into darkness
    •    Truth into confusion
    •    Healing into brokenness
    •    Life into death
    •    Salvation into humanity

Final Thought

Thoughts come from a person.
Words come from a speaker.
Spirit reveals inward reality.
Truth comes from living presence.
Light comes from divine life.

John 1 does not reveal Jesus Christ as a mere idea in eternity.

It reveals Him as the living self-expression of God made known to the world.

And the same light that shined in the beginning still shines now.
