Leadership Month Devotion – Day 1

Leadership Month Devotion – Day 1

The First Person You Must Lead Is Yourself

Scripture

“He who is slow to anger is better than the mighty, And he who rules his spirit than he who takes a city.”
Proverbs 16:32 (NKJV)

Devotion

One of the greatest misconceptions about leadership is that it begins when people start following you. The Bible teaches something different. Leadership begins long before anyone notices you. It begins in the quiet decisions you make every day.

Before David led Israel, he learned faithfulness while caring for sheep. Before Joseph governed Egypt, he learned integrity in slavery and prison. Before Moses led a nation, God shaped him in the wilderness. Even Jesus spent years preparing before beginning His public ministry.

God is more interested in developing the leader within you than giving you a title. He knows that if you cannot govern your own thoughts, emotions, words, and choices, you will eventually struggle to lead others well.

Our culture often teaches us to pursue influence, recognition, and success. The Kingdom teaches us to pursue faithfulness, humility, and service. The world says, “Build your platform.” Jesus says, “Take up your cross.” The world celebrates those who conquer others. God honors those who first learn to rule their own spirit.

Today, ask yourself: Am I becoming the kind of person God can trust with greater influence?

Leadership Reflection
    •    Am I taking responsibility for my life instead of making excuses?
    •    Are my thoughts aligned with God’s Word or shaped by the culture around me?
    •    Do my words bring life and encouragement to others?
    •    How do I respond when I face pressure, disappointment, or criticism?
    •    Am I serving others with humility, following the example of Christ?

Leadership Challenge

Today, intentionally lead yourself before trying to lead anyone else. Choose one area your attitude, your words, your thoughts, or your responses and surrender it to God. Remember, every great leader is first a faithful disciple.

Prayer

Father, thank You for calling me to lead by first leading myself. Help me to renew my mind with Your Word, guard my heart, control my tongue, and rule my spirit through the power of the Holy Spirit. Form in me the character of Christ so that I may influence others with humility, wisdom, and love. Teach me to pursue faithfulness over fame and service over status. May my life reflect Your Kingdom in everything I do. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Today’s Leadership Principle

“The greatest victory in leadership is not conquering people it is learning to govern yourself under the lordship of Jesus Christ.”
