Image Before Influence: Living Dominion from Genesis to Everyday Life

Image Before Influence: Living Dominion from Genesis to Everyday Life

Everything begins in Genesis.

Before sin.

Before struggle.

Before systems.

There was design.

Our foundation is found in Genesis 1:26–27:

“Then God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion…

So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.”

Notice the order.

Image comes first.

Dominion comes second.

Authority flows from identity.

You were not given dominion because of performance..

You were given dominion because of design.

You were created to reflect Him, and from that reflection, to govern responsibly.

What It Means to Bear His Image

Being made in God’s image does not mean you resemble Him physically.

It means you reflect Him spiritually.

You were designed to carry:

  • His character
  • His creativity
  • His moral capacity
  • His relational depth
  • His ability to cultivate and govern

Image means representation.

Humanity was placed in the earth as a visible reflection of an invisible God.

Not to replace Him.

But to reveal Him.

Image is not about ego.

It is about alignment.

Dominion Is Responsibility, Not Control

Genesis 1:26 says, “Let them have dominion…”

Dominion is not domination.

It is stewardship with authority.

It means:

  • Bring order to chaos
  • Cultivate what is undeveloped
  • Protect what is valuable
  • Build what is life-giving

Dominion is not about controlling people.

It is about governing purpose.

If you misunderstand dominion, you either abuse authority or avoid responsibility.

But biblical dominion is partnership.

God created.

Humanity cultivated.

God designed.

Humanity developed.

The Command to Develop

Then comes the expansion in Genesis 1:28:

“Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it…”

This was not merely biological.

It was developmental.

Fruitfulness means what is inside of you produces life outside of you.

Multiplication means healthy things increase.

Replenishing means what is broken is restored.

Subduing means chaos is brought into order.

But here is the key:

You cannot exercise healthy dominion if your image is distorted.

You cannot govern externally what you have not aligned internally.

The Battle Over Image

In Genesis 3, the first thing attacked was not territory.

It was identity.

“Did God really say…?”

Because when image is questioned, dominion weakens.

When people forget who they are,

They either surrender authority

Or misuse it.

God’s redemptive work has always been about restoring image so that dominion can function correctly.

As written in Colossians 1:15:

“He is the image of the invisible God…”

Christ restores what was fractured.

He does not just forgive behavior.

He renews identity.

Making It Practical: Living Image and Dominion Daily

Theology must become practice.

So what does image and dominion look like in real life?

Not in theory.

Not in titles.

But in Tuesday mornings and difficult conversations.

  1. On Your Job: Represent Before You Perform

Being made in God’s image means you represent Him wherever you are placed.

Dominion at work is not about position.

It is about posture.

It looks like:

  • Integrity when no one is watching
  • Excellence without arrogance
  • Leadership without ego
  • Accountability without excuses
  • Consistency without applause

You don’t dominate your workplace.

You cultivate it.

You bring order where there is confusion.

You bring solutions where there are problems.

You bring steadiness where there is instability.

That is dominion.

You don’t just clock in.

You reflect heaven through responsibility.

2. In Marriage: Govern Yourself First

Dominion in marriage is not control.

It is maturity.

Image in marriage looks like:

  • Listening before reacting
  • Serving without keeping score
  • Apologizing without defensiveness
  • Choosing unity over ego
  • Protecting the covenant

You cannot subdue your spouse.

You are called to subdue your pride.

Strong marriages are not built on dominance.

They are built on two image-bearers choosing alignment.

That is dominion expressed through love.

3. In Your Family: Cultivate, Don’t Control

Genesis calls us to replenish and subdue not to intimidate.

In your home, dominion looks like:

  • Healthy structure
  • Clear values
  • Loving correction
  • Emotional safety
  • Spiritual consistency

You don’t just provide materially.

You cultivate atmosphere.

You don’t just discipline behavior.

You shape character.

Your home should reflect order, growth, and security.

That is image-bearing leadership.

4. In How You Treat People: Reflect His Character

Image becomes visible in how you treat others.

Especially those who cannot benefit you.

Dominion is demonstrated in restraint.

In patience.

In mercy.

In self-control.

When offended, do you react or respond?

When challenged, do you attack or engage?

When inconvenienced, do you withdraw or mature?

You subdue:

  • Anger
  • Insecurity
  • Pride
  • Impulses

Because dominion begins within.

A Final Charge

Image is not a concept to admire.

It is a reality to embody.

Dominion is not a title to claim.

It is a responsibility to carry.

You reflect God not by announcing Him

But by resembling Him.

On your job.

In your marriage.

In your parenting.

In conflict.

In pressure.

In success.

In private.

This is where image is tested.

This is where dominion is proven.

Not in visibility

But in consistency.

You don’t need more influence to walk in dominion.

You need more alignment.

You don’t need a louder voice to carry authority.

You need a deeper foundation.

Before you ask for expansion,

Ask for refinement.

Before you pray for elevation,

Pray for transformation.

Before you seek more territory,

Subdue what is already inside you.

Because image precedes increase.

Character precedes capacity.

Alignment precedes authority.

And when your inner world is governed,

Your outer world becomes fruitful.

That is Genesis lived out.

Not just theology.

Not just inspiration.

But daily dominion.

And that is how heaven intended it from the beginning.
