What Makes Up a Human Being?
This is an important question because it helps us understand both humanity and the incarnation of Jesus Christ. If we understand what a human being is, we can better understand what it means that Christ truly became man.
The Bible often describes a human being as consisting of spirit, soul, and body. These are not three separate people, but three aspects of one human life.
What Makes Up a Human Being?
1. Body
The body is the physical part of us that interacts with the natural world. It allows us to see, hear, speak, move, and function on earth.
Genesis 2:7
“And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground…”
The body connects us to the earthly realm.
2. Soul
The soul often refers to the mind, will, emotions, personality, desires, and self-awareness. It is the seat of thoughts and choices.
Matthew 26:38
“My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even to death.”
Jesus Himself spoke of the soul.
3. Spirit
The spirit is the deepest inward part of man that relates to God, receives spiritual life, and carries inward awareness.
Proverbs 20:27
“The spirit of a man is the lamp of the Lord…”
The spirit is where divine light and inward witness are often described.
Humanity Includes Spirit, Soul, and Body
I Thessalonians 5:23
“May your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless…”
This verse clearly names the fullness of human makeup.
Did Jesus Share Full Humanity?
If Jesus became truly human, then His humanity was complete not partial. He did not merely wear a body. He entered real human life with body, soul, and spirit while remaining sinless.
Jesus Truly Grew as a Man
Luke 2:52
“And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men.”
He experienced real human growth and development.
A Spirit Is Not Flesh and Bone
Luke 24:39
“A spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see I have.”
Jesus distinguished spiritual existence from bodily existence.
He Shared Our Flesh and Blood
Hebrews 2:14
“Inasmuch then as the children have partaken of flesh and blood, He Himself likewise shared in the same…”
He truly entered our human condition.

A human being is commonly described in Scripture as body, soul, and spirit. Jesus Christ entered that full human reality so He could redeem the whole person.
He became what we are, without sin, so that we might be restored to what God intended.
