Build Your Life with Gold, Silver, and Precious Stones
Primary Text: 1 Corinthians 3:10–15 (NKJV)
What Are You Building?
Every person is building something.
Some are building careers.
Some are building businesses.
Some are building wealth.
Some are building influence.
Some are building ministries.
But the question is not simply what you are building.
The question is how you are building.
Paul writes:
“Now if anyone builds on this foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw, each one’s work will become clear; for the Day will declare it, because it will be revealed by fire; and the fire will test each one’s work, of what sort it is.” (1 Corinthians 3:12–13, NKJV)
Notice that Paul does not merely say the fire will test our work.
He says it will test what sort of work it is.
God is concerned not only with our actions but with the heart from which they flow.
Gold, Silver, and Precious Stones
Gold…
Silver…
Precious stones…
These endure the fire.
They represent works done for the glory of God, flowing from faith, obedience, and love for Christ.
Wood…
Hay…
Straw…
They cannot withstand the fire.
They represent works that may appear impressive before people but lack eternal value because they were built on wrong motives or misplaced priorities.
The Heart Behind the Work
God always looks deeper than outward performance.
“For the LORD does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.” (1 Samuel 16:7, NKJV)
“And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men.” (Colossians 3:23, NKJV)
“Whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.” (1 Corinthians 10:31, NKJV)
The motive matters.
Two Rich Men
Imagine two wealthy Christian men.
Both gave millions to feed the poor.
Both built shelters.
Both clothed the needy.
Outwardly, their lives looked almost identical.
But God saw something no one else could see.
The first man gave because he felt sorry for people.
His identity was wrapped up in being known as a generous man.
Doing good became the source of his worth.
His compassion, though sincere, never flowed from a growing love for God.
The second man also loved the poor.
But he first loved God.
He desired above everything else to please Christ.
His generosity was not an attempt to establish his identity.
His identity was already secure in God’s love.
His good works flowed from worship.
When both men stood before Christ, the fire revealed what could never be seen on earth.
The first man’s works were consumed because they were built upon human motivation rather than devotion to God.
The second man’s works remained because they flowed from a heart surrendered to Christ.
The difference was not the size of the gift.
The difference was the heart behind it.
Build Your Life for Eternity
Anyone can climb the corporate ladder.
Anyone can inherit wealth.
Anyone can gain influence.
Anyone can accumulate possessions.
Even unbelievers can perform remarkable acts of kindness.
But only what is built upon Christ and done for His glory will endure forever.
Jesus said:
“For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul?” (Mark 8:36, NKJV)
Paul reminds us:
“For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive the things done in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad.” (2 Corinthians 5:10, NKJV)
“The Day”
Paul says,
”…the Day will declare it…” (1 Corinthians 3:13, NKJV)
There is a coming day when our lives will be fully revealed before Christ.
Not merely our actions.
Our motives.
Our priorities.
Our faithfulness.
Our love.
Nothing hidden will remain hidden.
Jesus said:
“For there is nothing covered that will not be revealed, nor hidden that will not be known.” (Luke 12:2, NKJV)
And Paul wrote:
“Therefore judge nothing before the time, until the Lord comes, who will both bring to light the hidden things of darkness and reveal the counsels of the hearts.” (1 Corinthians 4:5, NKJV)
On that day, heaven will not measure our lives merely by earthly success.
Christ will evaluate what kind of life we built upon Him.
The Final Question
When your life passes through the fire…
Will it be gold?
Will it be silver?
Will it be precious stones?
Or will it be wood, hay, and straw?
Build your life on Christ.
Love God first.
Let your identity come from being His child—not from your accomplishments.
Then let every act of kindness, every gift, every sacrifice, every business, every sermon, every prayer, and every service flow from a heart that simply desires to hear these words:
“Well done, good and faithful servant.” (Matthew 25:21, NKJV)
What you build for yourself may last a lifetime.
What you build for Christ will last for eternity.
