Bearing False Witness
The Power of Truth, Integrity, and Responsible Words
One of the Ten Commandments says:
“You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.”
Exodus 20:16
Many people think this commandment is only about lying in court, but bearing false witness reaches much deeper than that.
Bearing false witness is speaking in a way that twists truth, damages reputations, spreads deception, or misrepresents people, situations, or motives.
It includes:
• False accusations
• Gossip
• Slander
• Manipulation
• Twisting facts
• Half-truths
• Exaggeration
• Emotional narratives without truth
• Pretending to know what you really do not know
Words carry spiritual weight.
“Life and death are in the power of the tongue.”
Proverbs 18:21
Why God Takes It Seriously
False witness destroys trust.
It can damage:
• Families
• Friendships
• Marriages
• Ministries
• Businesses
• Communities
• Leadership
• Reputations
One lie can create years of pain.
This is why mature believers must become disciplined with words, assumptions, and emotional reactions.
Not every thought deserves expression.
Not every feeling represents truth.
Not every story should be repeated.
Example One: Gossip in a Church
Imagine someone in a church hears that a leader missed a few phone calls or canceled meetings.
Without knowing the facts, they begin telling others:
“They don’t care about people anymore.”
“They’ve changed.”
“They’re acting funny.”
“They only care about money now.”
But in reality, the leader may have been dealing with exhaustion, family pressure, grief, spiritual warfare, or health issues.
Now a false narrative has been created.
People begin viewing that leader through suspicion instead of truth.
This becomes bearing false witness because assumptions turned into accusations without understanding.
The Bible says:
“He who answers a matter before he hears it, it is folly and shame to him.”
Proverbs 18:13
Example Two: Manipulating Facts in Relationships
Imagine a couple arguing.
One person tells friends:
“They never help me.”
“They never support me.”
“They are always selfish.”
But the full story is missing.
Maybe the other person works long hours, pays bills faithfully, sacrifices privately, and supports the family in ways that are not being acknowledged.
Emotions have now distorted reality.
Instead of communicating honestly, exaggeration and emotional storytelling replaced truth.
This creates division and damages trust.
False witness often begins when emotions become louder than honesty.
Satan Operates Through Lies
Jesus said concerning Satan:
“…he is a liar and the father of it.”
John 8:44
The kingdom of darkness spreads through:
• Deception
• Confusion
• Accusation
• Distortion
But the Kingdom of God operates through:
• Truth
• Integrity
• Love
• Discernment
• Honesty
• Righteous judgment
This is why believers must guard their words carefully.
Mature Believers Learn Restraint
Spiritual maturity is not only seen in prayer, preaching, or revelation.
It is also seen in:
• How you speak about people
• How you handle information
• How you respond emotionally
• How careful you are with assumptions
Mature believers understand:
• Every rumor is not truth
• Every accusation is not wisdom
• Every emotional reaction is not discernment
Wisdom pauses before speaking.
Jesus Is the Truth
Jesus said:
“I am the way, the truth, and the life.”
John 14:6
Truth is not merely information.
Truth is connected to the nature of God.
This is why integrity matters in the Kingdom.
God desires His people to become trustworthy, honest, balanced, and mature in communication.
Final Thought
Before repeating information, ask:
• Is it true?
• Is it necessary?
• Is it loving?
• Is it verified?
• Does it build or destroy?
Words can:
• Heal or wound
• Build or destroy
• Clarify or confuse
As believers, we must become people who protect truth instead of spreading confusion.
Because every word carries influence.
